TikTok Spark Ads: a practical checklist before launch

A creator's post can look ready for advertising while the campaign brief is still incomplete. The wrong caption, an expiring authorization or a destination that does not match the video can undermine the handoff before you evaluate any creative performance.

This is a preparation workflow for Spark Ads in manual or search campaigns. TikTok maintains a separate setup path for Smart+ campaigns. Start with the Spark Ads preparation checklist, then use the instructions for the campaign type available in your account.

Identify the exact post and identity

TikTok's Spark Ads creation guide describes using linked identities or a creator's authorization code to select an organic post. Record the post URL, creator identity and intended advertiser before anyone begins assembly.

Keep an internal reference such as commuter_creator_a_post_01. The caption, identity and destination should be checkable from that one reference. If the creator sends a revised post, treat it as a new item in the checklist rather than assuming the original authorization and review apply.

Store authorization codes in the team's approved private system. The public post URL belongs in a shared brief when appropriate; access codes should not be copied into a public blog, example spreadsheet or newsletter.

Review the authorization and usage agreement

Confirm that the selected identity and post are available to the intended ad account and that the displayed authorization period covers the planned campaign dates. Check the separate agreement with the creator for the usage being proposed, including edits, markets and any exclusivity commitments relevant to the project.

These are different checks. A platform authorization being accepted does not, by itself, tell a reviewer what the parties agreed about compensation or usage. When an agreement is unclear, resolve it with the owner before launch instead of treating an interface success message as the answer.

Put the approval owner, evidence location and expiry review date in the worksheet. An empty cell should remain visibly unresolved, not turn into an assumed yes because the launch date is close.

Freeze the caption and inspect the real post

The official guide says an authorized post's caption cannot be edited afterward. It also notes that a private video used in a campaign becomes public during promotion. Review those implications with the creator before using the post.

For the hypothetical backpack campaign, inspect the actual opening scene, spoken claim, on-screen text and final call to action. If the video shows an organizer, verify whether the offer includes it. If the caption promises a discount, make sure the destination provides that exact offer under the stated conditions.

Check audio, product depiction and any customer or creator statements as part of the existing review process. Do not invent a testimonial or use a generated person to imply a real purchase experience. Keep the approved version identifiable after the campaign is assembled.

Test the destination on a phone

Build the campaign URL with the UTM builder. Use a consistent convention such as source tiktok, medium paid_social, campaign commuter_october and content creator_a_post_01. Labels are useful for reporting, but they do not configure the TikTok pixel or a conversion event.

Open the full destination on a phone and complete your approved test journey. Confirm that redirects preserve the parameters your measurement setup requires, that the right product is in stock and that the advertised offer is visible. Record the event expected at the end of the journey and who verified it.

The launch-check workflow contains a reusable approach to evidence and ownership. Its Google-specific account settings do not transfer to TikTok; validate the corresponding TikTok setup with the campaign owner.

Agree on the measurement before publishing

Write down the campaign objective, authorized budget, dates and business outcome. Then choose the attention metrics you will use to diagnose the creative, keeping them separate from purchase or qualified-lead results.

TikTok's video metrics reference defines the available view measures. The hook-rate guide explains why a six-second metric should not automatically be treated as a pure retention count. Keep the exported metric names in the results sheet.

Hand off a complete approval record

The account owner should be able to inspect the exact post, selected identity, authorization period, final URL, conversion check and approved spend from one record. Use the actual ad preview to verify the assembled result before the authorized person publishes it.

This checklist makes no account connection and does not publish an ad. After launch, use the same creative reference when reviewing outcomes and schedule a check before authorization or usage terms expire. A clean handoff is useful even when the first test does not perform well, because it makes the next decision explainable.
