A Google Ads launch check for URLs, copy and measurement

Check the destination, tracking and copy before approving the launch.

A working destination URL and a short headline are only part of a campaign launch. This workflow gives the campaign owner a record of what was checked, by whom and with what evidence. It uses local browser tools and makes no changes to an advertising account.

1. Write down the intended conversion

Start with the business event you expect to measure: a completed purchase, a qualified enquiry or a subscription. Record the event name, value treatment and reporting owner in the Google Ads launch checklist. A page view is not automatically a qualified lead.

Complete a test journey through your own measurement setup. Check that the intended event appears once, carries the expected value and currency when applicable, and follows your consent configuration. A URL builder cannot verify any of these conditions for you.

2. Make campaign naming consistent

Use the URL builder below with your final landing page. You can also open the standalone UTM builder. For a worked example, use source google, medium cpc, campaign commuter_october and content studio_a. Copy the resulting URL into your checklist, then open it on a phone.

Check that the destination loads, that any existing query parameters survive, and that the offer matches the ad. Avoid personal data in campaign parameters. Google Analytics documents how campaign parameters populate acquisition reports; consistent names make those reports easier to compare.

Build a tracking URL

Use your final landing page and naming convention. Copy the result into your launch checklist.

3. Verify the actual Google Ads tracking path

Google Ads auto-tagging adds click identifiers used by connected measurement systems. Manual UTM labels are not a substitute for checking that configuration. Confirm the current account settings and test whether redirects preserve the parameters your measurement setup needs, following Google's auto-tagging guidance.

If the account uses tracking templates or final URL suffixes, have its owner validate the assembled URL in Google Ads. Do not blindly paste the same tracking string into several configuration levels. Keep the evidence, the final destination and the person who approved it in one checklist row.

4. Check the copy, then preview the ad

Paste each headline and description into the Google Ads copy length checker. Responsive search ad headlines allow 30 characters and descriptions allow 90; double-width characters count as two. The official responsive search ad documentation explains the limits and assembly behavior.

Review the offer and claims manually. Read the assets in different combinations, then preview them in Google Ads. A passing length check does not validate policy compliance, guarantee that every asset appears or confirm how a specific placement will render.

Check your headline and description

Paste your copy to check its length. Review the claims, combinations and final ad separately.

28 / 30

2 weighted characters remaining.

81 / 90

9 weighted characters remaining.

The checker counts CJK characters as two. Validate unusual symbols and the final asset in Google Ads.

5. Record the approval boundary

Before launch, the campaign owner should record the approved budget, dates, geography, conversion goal and automation choices. Keep unresolved items visibly open. The checklist has an owner, status and evidence column so another person can inspect the decision without reconstructing it from chat.

For AI Max or Performance Max campaigns, document the automation settings relevant to your campaign rather than assuming a generic launch template covers them. Our Google AI Max guide discusses the questions to review.

6. Carry the checked brief into AdRails

The AdRails guide explains the next step for supported campaign review and management. Bring the approved brief and links into that process. This checklist has no live account connection, no automated publishing step and no claimed direct AdRails import.

After launch, revisit the measurement evidence and spend pacing with the campaign owner. Keep the checklist as the baseline for explaining which settings changed and why.
